Surf Months

There are certain times of the year that offer better and bigger swells. Between May and September you can plan on getting the biggest waves the Maldives have to offer (not including freak tsunami events). They waves will get about 6-7 ft with mostly sunny conditions and prime offshore wind for powerful tubes.

Don't count out the rest of the year though, because the Maldives have some of the best weather known for surfers, and some of the most consistent waves in the indian ocean. March and april are typified by slightly smaller waves but still not bad, avergaing about 4-5 ft.

From about Nov-Feb you'll get small waves great for beginners and although the Maldives are completely coral, you can expect mostly soft coral in the good spots.

Many travel and touristic companies to the Maldives offer surf packages and liveaboard offers, but if you wan't to get the best comparison you can check out www.maldivesdirectory.com and compare different booking agencies to find your best deal.

Cheers, good luck, and great waves!

Yea, whenever there is some crazy weather, be sure that there will be some crazy waves! The summer months generally fall on monsoon season leading to some crazy swells, but that should only be tackled by more seasoned surfers and is not recommended for beginners.

Yea, I don't know about those huge waves you're talking about, but you should be careful with the reefs in the Maldives. There may not be huge and powerful waves, but there are most definitely very shallow waves around pretty painful reefs, so just learn to fall properly and avoid diving straight into the reefs!
